Only in Jersey

Here’s a good laugh for you.

Only is New Jersey it is illegal to frown at a police officer. Yes, that’s right. It’s in the books and it is a law, despite how ridiculous it may seem. Many old laws have slipped by and are still on the lists of illegal activity. While they may not be enforced, these weird laws are still around. Nowadays with all the hate projected against our police, if this law was enforced, there would be an awful lot of people in jail!

More intriguing is that in Bernards Township it is illegal to frown at all!

It’s also illegal in New Jersey that if convicted of driving under the influence, you’re no longer allowed to have custom license plates. I don’t know, I always though custom plates were a lot easier to remember in a hit and run accident then trying to jot down plate numbers.

In Blairstown, New Jersey, it’s illegal to plant trees along the street that “obscure the air.”

In Haddon Township, Statute 175-12, it is illegal to annoy someone of the opposite sex. Guess they don’t have any domestic violence cases in that township.
In Ocean City, it is illegal to slurp your soup in a public place. Also, you can’t play pinball machines on Sundays.
In Trenton, it is illegal to eat pickles on Sundays. I guess you’ll have to order that Whopper without pickles. It’s also illegal to toss a bad pickle into the road.

In Newark, it is illegal to purchase ice cream after 6 pm without a doctor’s note. Potential penalties for breaking the New Jersey ice cream law include hefty fines, and store owners can face consequences as well.

It is illegal for birds to poop on statues. Like they have brains to comprehend! It is also illegal to delay or detain a homing pigeon. Like we’re living in Game of Thrones time.

It’s illegal to dance or to wear shorts on the main avenue in Caldwell.

It is illegal for a man to knit during fishing season. I won’t touch that one!

It is illegal to wear a bulletproof vest while committing a murder. It is also illegal to commit murder. Wear a bulletproof vest while you’re doing it and you’ll serve double time.

In Teaneck- These ordinances included a prohibition on lewd acts in private and dressing in the clothes of the opposite sex. Even spitting on the sidewalk or street in Teaneck could get you a $25 fine (if you found a police officer that wanted to enforce this law).

In Manville, it is illegal to offer alcohol or tobacco to zoo animals. They might just like it. Wouldn’t you if you were stuck in a cage most of your life!

New Jersey Blue Laws. The Blue Laws prohibit the sale of certain items, such as appliances, on Sundays. Bergen County residents making Sunday plans can count on one thing: the mall is not an option. Bergen County is one of the last in the United States to enforce “blue laws,” the seemingly pesky restrictions on what is bought and sold on.

It’s illegal to pump your own gas. New Jersey’s ban was enacted in 1949, with officials citing safety concerns about people pumping gas themselves. One argument is you could accidentally light yourself on fire (though that doesn’t seem to be an issue in other states). Another is that self-serve could expose more people to dangerous vapors. It’s currently being debated over in congress.

It is illegal for a car to pass a horse-drawn carriage. It’s also illegal for a carriage to be on a highway unless covered in bells.

It is illegal to boil bones on your property in Sea Isle City. Does that mean they can’t ever make soup?

Cats must warn birds of their whereabouts in Cresskill. They must wear at least 3 bells on them at all times.

In New Jersey you must honk before passing another car, bicyclists, or even someone on a skateboard.

Did you know New Jersey has its own volcano! Extinct for 440 million years, you can find what remains at Rutan Hill in Wantage Township. The site is well-regarded by geologists due to the presence of a rare type of igneous rock.

Did you know that Hoboken was home to America’s first brewery, established in 1642.

Most people who live in the state refer to it as Jersey. “I’m from Jersey!!!! They drop the New.
If you’re in North Jersey, you’re probably safe saying Taylor Ham. In South Jersey, say Pork Roll if you want to survive. Central Jersey is a mixed bag, look carefully at menus and proceed with caution. Speaking of Central Jersey, does anyone know what towns actually constitute it?”
