Millstone Township, New Jersey, March 13, 2026 – Millstone Township will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution by hosting the George Washington Encampment on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The encampment will be held at the Baird Farmstead located at 24 Baird Road in Millstone Township. The event is free and open to the public.
Like many places in New Jersey, Millstone Township was caught up in the war that raged across the colonies, and many residents joined the patriot cause. One of the key events in the township took place in June 1778, when the British Army marched across New Jersey on the way to New York. Under the leadership of General Henry Clinton, their weary army, harassed by American sharpshooters and worn down by hot humid weather, trudged through present-day Millstone Township, where they camped along Stagecoach Road. The next evening, pursuing American forces led by the Marquis de Lafayette and Alexander Hamilton camped at the same location. Two days later the armies met at the Battle of Monmouth.

Millstone Township and the Friends of Millstone Township Historic Registered Properties are celebrating our community’s and region’s rich Revolutionary War history by hosting this event.
Professional reenactors at the encampment will portray the 1st New Jersey Regiment, George and Martha Washington, and Hannah Archer Till, George Washington’s enslaved cook who accompanied Washington on his military campaigns for over six years. Attendees will have the opportunity to listen to 18th-century music, participate in musket drills, visit a field hospital and learn about how a colonial army on the move managed its cooking, laundry and food rations. Live farm animals will be available to “meet and greet,” helping us to tell the story of the livestock that traveled with the army. The event is family friendly with activities for people of all ages.
Free parking will be available across from the Baird Homestead at the Millstone Township Middle School. Food and drink will be available for purchase from food trucks.
